The Bungalow
The Bungalow began with a much-loved home that was no longer serving the evolving needs of its family. While rich in character, the existing Californian Bungalow required thoughtful adaptation to better support everyday life and connection.
The design responds to the clients’ desire for spaces that bring family and friends together while opening the home to its lush Highlands garden. The proposal embraces the inherent simplicity and artistry of the original bungalow, carefully extending its scale and language rather than competing with it.
A series of interconnected yet varied spaces provide opportunities for gathering and retreat, allowing the home to feel both generous and intimate. The result is a considered renovation that enriches daily life while respecting the character of the original home.
“This was the first time I had ever worked with an architect and Alex was so great at explaining things, really listening to our wants and needs, and offering intelligent and thoughtful suggestions and ideas when needed. We are doing a big renovation to an old house and Alex understood the importance of respecting the history of the building whilst updating it to be as comfortable as possible for the present day. Given her first hand experience of designing a house that caters for the needs of a young family, it was clear that Alex applied what she knows works best whilst also listening to what we wanted. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to others and I hope to work with her again in the future. ”
